Link to One Mama Roundup: One Mom’s Top Product Picks for Sleeping

Here’s hoping your little ones were as sleepy after the big Thanksgiving turkey dinner as I was! And in the event that a good night’s rest isn’t on the menu, here are my top product picks for putting your little ones on the road to dream land.

#1 – The MVP: The Technique (The Happiest Baby on the Block)
One of my cousins recommended this book after having her little girl and my grandmother bought me a copy while I was pregnant. It’s an interesting read and, whether or not you subscribe to the author’s idea of the “missing fourth trimester,” the techniques are solid. This book gave me the inspiration, skill and confidence I needed to find that magic combination of stimuli that would consistently calm my daughter down so I could get her to sleep (which happened to be absurdly loud “shushing” sometimes with additional accompaniment from the bathroom exhaust fan or blow-dryer, vigorous jiggling and a good, tight swaddle). Even though I’m certain my baby was especially calm by comparison, I would swear by these techniques and the reassurance they provided.

#2 – Swaddlers
I received some super cute, gauzy organic cotton swaddling blankets as a baby shower gift. But even with a diagram provided in the book above, it just wouldn’t work. I could not fold the blasted things so that my little one would stay a nice, neat, tightly wrapped baby burrito. Each time I would try, my daughter would wriggle out in mere minutes. Maybe I should have spent more time in grade school folding paper airplanes and fortune tellers. But I didn’t so now I’m a nerd who can’t fold a swaddling blanket. That’s where Velcro comes in. These little swaddlers provide a nice, tight, secure swaddle without all the fuss. I’m not sure I could have survived without them!

Link to One Mama Roundup: One Mom’s Top Eleven Product Picks for Feeding

Whether by breast or by bottle, you’re going to be doing it every few hours for the first several months so you definitely want to have the right gear. My ten-month-old still nurses regularly but since I work, she has to take a bottle as well. Here are my top picks to help you get the job done no matter how you choose to do it.

#1 – The MVP: My Brest Friend Nursing Pillow

At home in the nursery, in the car and everywhere else, this is the one thing I could not have done without. I know some moms swear by their Boppy pillow, but you would never convince me to trade my Brest Friend. This pillow becomes feeding central with a strap that fastens all the way around you, built-in lumbar support, a broad, firm cushion with perfectly positioned mounded head rests on either side and a handy pocket to hold anything you need to keep handy. Whether you nurse or bottle feed, this pillow keeps you and your little one perfectly positioned and comfortable.

The Essentials

While the My Brest Friend pillow was, by far, my most favorite product for feeding, there are a few things that you have to have. No, seriously, you HAVE to have them. From preventing leaks to keeping things flowing, here are some of my favorite essentials.

#2 – Lansinoh HPA Lanolin

All of the doctors and nurses at the hospital where I delivered where obsessed with this stuff. Every single time someone new came into the room, they would rattle off the same questions: “Did someone tell you about the cream? Are you using the cream? Do you need more cream?” It got to the point that I didn’t want to hear another word about “the cream” but it didn’t take me long to understand why they were so fixated on it. If you’re going to nurse, this is a must-have for preventing drying, cracking and other nasty business that can put a serious damper on an already challenging activity. I used it every time I nursed and then right before getting in the shower. And the best part is that there’s no need to wipe it off to nurse—it’s completely safe for baby.

#3 – Johnson’s Nursing Pads

Now you might think, “A nursing pad is a nursing pad, right? What’s the difference?” Well, I found out the answer to that question first-hand. One of the great things about all the prep classes I took at the hospital was the swag. It allowed me to try out a lot of different products without having to invest in them. I must’ve had samples for at least five different brands of nursing pads to try out and they all paled miserable in comparison to good old Johnson’s. If you plan to nurse, stock up on these babies!

#4 – Bravado Body Silk Seamless Nursing Bra

I was positively lost when it came to nursing bras and being a well-endowed woman independent of all of the sizing changes that come with nursing didn’t help. I wandered aimlessly through the intimates section at Target at about eight months pregnant trying to determine what I needed for my impending arrival. Not wanting to spend the time required in the fitting room (it was hard enough to put my shoes on once a day let alone having to go through the changing required to try on bras!), I grabbed three different kinds of nursing bras and took them home where I could try them on in my own sweet time. I returned the molded cup bras. They would fit at one point and then, right around feeding time, let’s just say the cups “runneth over.” I wish I had returned the second kind. It was a soft cup BUT it was the sort that forms a circle all the way around the breast with a hole in the center. I couldn’t stand this type of bra in the end. As my breasts would enlarge, that little circle of fabric would tighten and tighten. The Bravado seamless bra is the best thing ever. I went out and bought several more and now this is the only type of nursing bra I wear. I know some reviews have claimed that they lack the adequate support to be used as an everyday bra, but I haven’t found this to be the case at all. I sleep in them, nurse in them, I LIVE in these bras!

#5 – Dr. Brown’s BPA-free Bottles

If you have friends that have used these, you’ve probably heard it before—these are the best bottles! We tried a few different bottles in the beginning and now these are the only bottles my husband will use. Go for these the first time and you won’t be disappointed.

Link to One Mama Roundup: One Mom’s Top Product Picks to Take You from the First Nine Months to the Next

Meet the Mama. My name is Jes and I’m a professional marketer (read: workaholic), self-confessed control freak, a total nerd and, as of ten months ago, a new mom. I used to work with Cammie and when I heard she was expecting, I was so excited for her! But as I read her posts exploring just a few of the zillions of products out there for taking care of a little one, I was transported back in time to about 20 months ago when I was trying to begin building my gift registry for the parade of baby showers to come. I was LOST. Strike that, I was BEYOND LOST. Most of my friends didn’t have children. My mother was helpful, but many of the products out there now weren’t even around when I was born. So I did what any nerd would do—I studied. I read thousands of reviews and forum posts. I did side-by-side comparisons. I tried samples. I took classes. I did everything I could do to build up as much knowledge as I could and then after my daughter was born, I threw everything I thought I knew out the window and started learning through experience.

Over a series of posts, I’ll share with you the products that help me get the hardest, most rewarding job done every day—the job of being a mom.

This Installment’s Category: The Pre-game

A good start into motherhood starts with a happy, healthy pregnancy and it’s no secret that being pregnant comes with its fair share of little discomforts. Here are some of my favorite things for smoothing the way to delivery day.

1. MVP: Snoogle Original Total Body Pregnancy Pillow

As I got bigger and bigger, I had a REALLY hard time getting comfortable enough to fall asleep. I started out just using normal pillows to prop my legs up. When that wasn’t enough, I bought an inexpensive body pillow and I got what I paid for—another pillow and not much relief. It was actually one of my husband’s pregnant co-workers that recommended the Snoogle. I found one at a local baby store and couldn’t believe the price. $50 for a pillow? Seriously?!!! I sucked it up and bought the pillow and I am SO glad I did! As it turns out, $50 is a small price to pay for a comfortable sleeping position when your eight or nine months pregnant. And ten months after having the baby, I still snuggle with my Snoogle nightly.

2. Gummy Pre-natal Vitamins

Thankfully, I didn’t have too many food aversions while I was pregnant. Chicken and mouthwash were the only things that I absolutely couldn’t handle (weird combo, right?) but I did find that my gag reflex was much more sensitive. More often than not, brushing my teeth would send me running for the sink, and not just to spit! So the idea of swallowing pills every day wasn’t especially appealing. I actually went looking for gummy vitamins pretty early on in the pregnancy but I couldn’t find any. Then one day while doing my weekly HBA shopping (that’s health and beauty aids for those of you who spend a less excessive amount of time at the grocery store), there they were! And I’m not the only one who loves them—after reading all the great stuff, my husband started taking them too. As it turns out, the same great stuff for building babies is also great for building muscles at the gym. It’s a win-win!

3. L’Occitane Ultra Riche Shower Cream and Shea Butter Body Lotion

Okay, this is less about the actual product than the idea behind it. I loved being pregnant but it definitely compounded my stress at work. It also made my already dry skin positively parched (having a baby in the desert in the dead of winter will do that to ya) and I hate, hate, HATE applying lotion. I’m not kidding. I’ll postpone shaving my legs for as long as I can simply because I hate applying lotion. For me, the trick was finding a beauty ritual that would simultaneously help me let go of the stress and give my skin the moisture it was craving. Your sense of smell is magnified while you’re pregnant and most of my normal go-to fragrances were suddenly too overpowering. My former boss and dear friend bought me a L’Occitane gift set for my birthday and I was hooked. This body wash and corresponding lotion became a nightly ritual that I looked forward to. It helped me feel calm, pampered and relaxed, and what pregnant lady can’t use more of that? Plus, it’s a great way to force yourself to slow down, enjoy your pregnancy and your remaining quite time before baby arrives.

4. Heart Rate Monitor

This is the particular brand I used, but there are plenty of other less expensive models out there. If you plan on an active pregnancy, this is a great way to get peace of mind during your workouts. Before getting pregnant, I had trained for two half marathons. I ran through most of my first trimester, but my doctor insisted that my heart shouldn’t be sustained above 140 beats per minute. Even in fairly good shape, it is EASY to climb above that 140 mark without really trying. This gadget forced me to maintain reasonable limits to ensure my workouts were safe for me and the baby on the way.

5. 2 Liter+ BPA-free Water Bottle

Yup. I’m that weird woman who carries an enormous water bottle around the office and I make no apologies for this! Why cart around a giant bottle when you could just continue refilling a smaller, more manageable one? Well, if you’re anything like me, you won’t. I used to carry around a much smaller bottle with the intent of refilling it but I found that I would often get busy and that plan would go out the window. That left me way less hydrated than I should have been. The average person needs one milliliter of water for every calorie you consume and this is even more critical when you’re pregnant. You’d be surprised how easy it is to drain a giant bottle when it’s right in front of you. That same urge you feel when you’re staring down a bag of chocolate-covered pretzels or a heaping bowl of chips and guac can be harnessed for the greater good. Give into the urge to consume and drink to your health!

6. MyRegistry.com

You’re going to need a lot of stuff and thankfully there are usually lots of people who will want to buy it for you (who doesn’t love shopping for tiny little clothes and other cute things?). The catch is there just isn’t one single place that’s got it all. That’s where MyRegistry.com comes in. You can build a gift registry full of products from all over the place. There’s even a mobile app that allows you to add items to your registry by scanning a product barcode with your phone. This invention of the internet age makes building your gift registry less fuss and more fun.

That’s the list for this installment of the One Mama Roundup! Be sure the check out the next roundup headed your way in a couple of weeks where I’ll be highlighting my top tools for Nursing and Feeding.
