DIY: Customized Cork Coasters

On Facebook last week, I noticed that Martha Stewart’s Fan Page was highlighting some adorable mojave letterpress coasters by In Haus Press. I loved the simple patterns on these coasters and the balance of cork and white.

These coasters got me excited about making some customized coasters of my own. So, I drove down to my local craft store and picked up a couple of $1.50 packages of cork coasters. Since I’m not very artistic, I just used a ruler, foam paint brush, and acrylic paint to jazz up my coasters. Fortunately, I actually ended up with an end result I love. View full post »

Homemade Baby Food: Creamy Peach Puree

This past weekend was crazy. Dallan was out of town, Josephine was sick, my house was a wreck and (to top it all off) I was trying to get Josephine and I packed for a trip. I’m heading out to Boston for a business trip this week and bringing Jo along (Why is traveling with a baby so stressful?). In the midst of the madness, I whipped up some pureed peaches for Josephine. Thanks to the microwave, this little recipe took less than 5 minutes. View full post »

DIY: Fall Acorn Mason Jars

One of my favorite fall trinkets is the acorn. I love their brown, woodish quality and think they are a great addition to pumpkins, squash and colorful leaves. Unfortunately, since there aren’t any trees near my house that produce acorns (or colorful leaves), I have to get most of my fall fixings from the local craft store.

Today, I added a little bit of fall to my house by filling mason jars with acorns and votive candles. This idea was easy and very inexpensive. Double Bonus.

What are some of your quick and cheap autumn decor tricks?

P.S. Years ago, I was camping with some friends. Around 5:00 am I was woken up by squirrels. They were pelting me with acorns. Who knew squirrels used them in self defense?

Ginger - I like that you’re getting autumn-y when it’s still sweltering summer. Maybe if I did that I wouldn’t be so miserable.

camberley - Ginger-

It’s definitely helped take my mind off the 100 degree heat. I crank my AC down to 73 and pretend it’s fall outside. ;)

Inside FHR: Pinterest & Balancing Energies

This past week I’ve been in a slump. I blamed it on various things, but never could quite really pinpoint what it was exactly that caused me to feel this way. It was really hard to get things done; however, there was one thing I was doing AND I was doing well– being on Pinterest.

I never really had the “pinning” bug up until this  point. But alas, it caught up to me and grabbed me by my keyboarding/mouse-holding fingertips. Here’s a few of my favorite things thus far:

  1. Picked up the paints again this week– thought this would be neat inspiration for a future project.
  2. I dream of the day I can stop working from my coffee table. My back is begging me for a chair!
  3. Stole this pin from Keighley. They are some pretty sweet bookends.
  4. A beautiful, delicate bracelet with an even more beautiful stone color.
  5. A fun knit for the fall.
  6. Kitschy envelopes that I would love to re-create!
  7. A clock that reminds me of eating orange slices.

And the good news is, I’ve been working on balancing my energies thanks to Keighley. I’ve been yoga-ing, meditating, making friends with trees (don’t bust it til’ you try it), and so on and so forth.

I can finally feel myself starting to come out of the yuckiness. It’s been wonderful! If  you find yourself in a similar slump, check out my ‘Soul’ board on Pinterest. It’s provided me with the internal balance I needed before I hit yet another semester of school (my last full-time semester as an undergrad!).

How do you find balance? Get out of a slump?

Debs - Best energy balancing tip {besides hugging a tree or spending hours on Pinterest}…sitting on the beach in Hawaii and listening to the waves. It’s working for me!
