Teacher Appreciation Week

May 7-11th 2012

Did you read the dates right?  Teacher Appreciation week is in May!

Got it?  Good.

You see, I didn’t read the dates right when I opened an email from my daughter’s school reminding me that it was coming up.  Call it mommy brain, sleep deprivation, or blame it on my blonde hair, but for whatever reason – I made a mistake!  Having received the email on Monday, April 9th, I quickly read it, figuring the office staff was giving me a friendly reminder to bring in a thoughtful gift before the week got away from me.  Well, I got it done alright. A WHOLE MONTH EARLY!!!

Something was off when I walked into the classroom to give the teacher my gift and her eyes got big while asking, “What is this for?”.  With a grin on my face, arms outstretched with my offering in hands, I confidently replied, “It’s a gift because we appreciate you! It’s teacher appreciation week so of course I wanted to bring you something.” She seemed confused but graciously received the gift, thanked me and then complimented my daughter. After only a minute of chit chat, I quickly exited the room, baffled by the teacher’s reaction.  After some thought, I decided to recheck the email and what do you know… I was A WHOLE MONTH EARLY!!!

So friends, learn from my mistake by reading dates carefully as to avoid embarrassment and go ahead and thank me because this post is giving you advanced notice to get your teacher appreciation gift put together.

I don’t think any of us know how much teacher’s really give, if we haven’t had the experience of teaching ourselves. Teachers shape the future for our children and I want to acknowledge those teachers who understand the influence they have and give extra effort to build confidence and courage in healthy, positive ways.  As a mother, I know I can’t raise my children on my own so I value ANY teacher who leaves a positive imprint on the life of one of my children.

So, what will you give your children’s teachers?

Here’s what I managed to put together.

Basket includes:

  • Daffodils
  • Symphony Bar
  • J.R. Watkins Liquid Hand Soap
  • J.R. Watkins All Purpose Cleaner

Look for another post on Teacher Appreciation Gift Ideas!

I love Dollar Tree.  I lack craft inspiration but once I walk into Dollar Tree or the dollar section at Target, I am enlightened.  I found these cute flower shaped doilies for $1 (each pack came with 40 doilies).  I know…gasp!!  Talk about a steal.

After getting them home, I brainstormed with the crafty guru and we plotted out these perfect little crafts.  My 2 year olds were a little too young to do them but the 4+ year olds really enjoyed this.  Cheap, fun and way cute – right?

Easy Kids Craft: Doily Easter Basket

Here is how you make these little Easter baskets.

Supplies:

  • Doilies from Dollar tree (or you can make some out of card stock.)
  • Twine, yarn, thread.  Anything to weave or sew through the holes.
  • Easter grass
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Some yummy goodies

Take two doilies and sew them together. Next, attach pipe cleaner to the top of the doilies to form a handle. Last, stuff the basket with grass and treats.

A Little Chaos Never Killed Anyone…

But I might be the first one to end up as its homicide victim.  The OCD in me is fraught with anxiety over the chaos in my life.  What, you might ask, is the cause? Well, it is an indirect result of something, or should I say someone, that is sweet and innocent, but throwing a wrench in my wheels nonetheless.  Readers, I’d like to personally introduce Miss Landrie Lou.

She is not a bad baby, she is simply baby!  I have the heavenly pleasure of waking up with her in the dark, still hours of each night, sometimes 2 or 3 times.  I am daily blessed to cradle her in my arms and stare lovingly into her dreamy eyes.  She is entrusted into my care and so I bathe, feed, burp, change and play with her.  While out running errands, there are moments I have no alternative but to take a time out from what I am doing to tend to her immediate needs.  A baby takes effort, and great care and that brings me to the answer of WHY I am living in chaos…

The house is an ABSOLUTE disaster.  There have recently been days that I run out of milk, yet I knew it was getting low, and so my children were forced to eat dry cereal in the morning.   The piles of laundry sit divided, but unwashed on the laundry room floor.  My bed has not been made in 2 days.  In fact, none of the beds in our home have been made for 2 days.   Phone calls are going unreturned and emails remain unopened. The dishwasher hasn’t been unloaded and the sink is piled high with dishes.  And the list goes on, and on, and on. I am just not getting things accomplished like I used to.

Those who know me would be astonished to see my home in such condition.  I am a perfectionist.  I thrive on organization.  I get excited to wipe things down with disinfectant wipes.  I love having laundry finished and put away so that dressers are brimming full of folded clothing, making it almost impossible to shut the drawers.  I like my bathrooms to smell like Clorox.  I love plumped up sofa cushions and rooms with everything in perfect place.  Vacuum marks thrill me!   Sadly, My home has none of these qualities at the moment.

This morning, as I sat there rocking my baby, my esteem shriveled inside as I beheld the chaos around me.  It was then that I took a good, hard look at what has been filling my time, besides tending to my bundle of joy.  Let’s see – Yesterday, I went to the Children’s Museum with my son and bought him a book in the gift store.  I diligently helped my daughter with her demanding homework.  I read a book to my kids.  Today was half day at school, so I took the kids out to lunch and then to the park with friends.  It hasn’t been much, but these things were difficult to do while caring for a baby.  I don’t list these things for praise, or for you to tell me, “Wow, that’s more than enough to be doing, especially with a newborn”.  I tell you about these things because I realized my children, without prodding, have genuinely thanked me for these things.  These things matter to them!  So, I now look at what was killing me inside this morning and realize it is chaos, beautiful chaos because I have let it go for something much more valuable.

At preschool on Thursday we finished up our letter “S” with a good ol’ Shamrock craft. I give you Patrick and Patty Shamrock. The kids loved it and did an awesome job putting Patty and Patrick Shamrock together. This is a great craft for the letter “S” and to teach kids about St. Patrick’s Day.

Materials:

Directions:

  1. Print your shamrock template (download here) out on green card stock or construction paper.
  2. Cut out shamrocks.
  3. Twist 2 of your pipe cleaners (or paper) and attach with hot glue to both sides for arms.
  4. Glue two wiggly eyes to the large shamrock.
  5. Use a marker or crayon to draw a smile.
  6. Cut one of your pipe cleaners in half (for the arms).  Then, glue all 4 pipe cleaners to the 4 small shamrocks for the hands and feed.  Next, glue the 4 pipe cleaners to the larger shamrock (i.e body) so Patty/Patrick have 2 arms and 2 feet.  Lastly, twist the pipe cleaners so the arms and legs are bent. Hint: if you don’t have pipe cleaner you may just use paper!

Don’t forget to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day (Saturday, March 17th)!
May you have warm words on a cold evening, a full moon on a dark night, and the road downhill all the way to your door.
