Link to Beautiful Burlap…

Burlap is big and beautiful-it’s everywhere you turn. I think that it’s a fun “texture” to use in home decor and can fit into many different decor styles.  Here’s a few ways that it’s being used…

Pillows, Hanging Ornaments, Flower Posey…and Pillows!

On Etsy I found this Jolie Marche Pillow.

How about a PB lampshade?

And I love this board from Pottery Barn as well.

Headboard are a great idea. Check out these on here.

Love the burlap with the carved and painted bed frame.

This French burlap chair has a more casual look…

And this burlap chaise lounge is combined with linen and silk for a more formal look.

What do you think?

Link to Bye Bye Birdie!

In my last post I mentioned that nature serves as a source of inspiration for decor themes and today’s “bird” trend proves it once again. Everywhere you look in the world of design you see these little creatures.  I have to come clean and tell you that I’m not a big fan of birds. Maybe it’s because I grew up with thousands of birds on our kitchen wallpaper in the 60′s and 70′s. Or that I watched the movie “The Birds” one too many times. Or that I equate these little “chirp chirps” with diseases like the “bird” flu.

But I’m obviously in the minority when it comes to liking bird decor.Just look at how birds are being used for home decor by stores like Pottery Barn and Anthropologie. Even websites like Etsy are on board with the bird trend.

Whether you agree or not-here are my thoughts on decorating with birds.

Bird wallpaper should be used with careful discretion.

You cannot convince me that “love” birds on wall paper is cute…even if it’s considered vintage…

 And the colors are fabulous…

Also-adding birdcages won’t convince me to put bird wallpaper up in my house either.

But I might consider using wallpaper like this in a baby’s nursery-with the understanding that a little bit will go a long way. (Like I said use with discretion.)

Bird pillows are easier to use in your decor because they aren’t such a long-term committment as wallpaper. I would consider using these in a beach house living room or a guest bedroom.

And to soften the bird look I’d add this…

 …a “Nest” pillow!

These eclectic bird pillows are a possibility. I like the variety and texture of these pillows which downplay the birds.

If you are a bird “purist” (which I am not) Pottery Barn has the perfect pillows for you.

And if you like something a little more whimsical these bird pillows on Etsy are a fun choice.

The popularity of birds is growing. It’s being incorporated more and more into upholestry, decorative accessories and unique wall decor. Tomorrow I will share more ideas and thoughts. Until then…

 Happy Decorating!

Link to CTR: Seeing “Red”…

Red is THE color that is synonymous with “heart” day. But it’s also a color that is used in decor all the time because it never goes out of style-it’s just a little different red than the previous year.

This year’s red was heavily influenced by the global focus on  ”green” living (think the family garden and tomatoes). Pantone calls the 2010 red color Tomato Puree.

Tomato red is not quite as bright, having more orange and white than does a true bright red. It’s still a bright, playful color, and falls firmly in the category of “red,” but it’s more subtle.

Red is also a great color to use for on an accent piece of furniture like a chest or an armoire…

  …a desk…

or an accent table or chairs!

But if you aren’t afraid to make a larger decor statement-how about grabbing a paint brush and adding a coat of paint to your walls and your cabinets.

Or buy a big red chair or…

…a leather sofa and add it to your room.

But if you’re not quite ready to make take the Tomato Red plunge (or you can’t afford to just yet). May I suggest…

MAC’s Chili Lipstick-it’s Tomato Red!

Happy Decorating!

Link to “Global Warming my …”

It’s been like this the past three days and I’m ready to pull my hair out (At least the view from our room is pretty rad, eh?)

So, what have I been doing indoors? I have been brewing up ideas for our bedroom. I do not want to spend any more mulah on furniture and we have yet to buy a headboard. I have decided to create my own somehow… and these are some ideas I have come up with:

I thought the pillow headboard was creative, but I know if I tried to pull it off it would look way tacky. What are your thoughts? Any ideas? You would think that decorating is in my blood since mamma Debs is so talented… but don’t be fooled! I need help.

Wish me luck! I will keep you posted.

xoxo Kiersten
